South Dakota Lost Its Last Video Rental Store in 2023
With different streaming services available at our fingertips, not many people have thought about walking into a video rental store. But believe it or not, there was one locally-owned video rental store left in South Dakota at the start of 2023.
Movie Mania in Pierre opened its doors 16 years ago on February 7th, 2007. It was the place to rent it all: Movies, video games, and purchasing a snack or two to go along with it. Unfortunately, the store owners made the difficult decision to close its doors on Friday, March 31, 2023.

Our news partners at Dakota News Now reported that store owner Nancy Hiller and her family were wrapping up this scene of their lives.
Movie Mania started with a "loan from a local bank and a few thousand movies from their own personal collection." It even expanded to selling different clothing merchandise and other items to keep up with the competition.
Even when other video rental stores were closing in 2019, Movie Mania stayed standing.
Movie Mania was an escape for Nancy and her husband. They work full-time jobs with the state government and ran the movie rental store in their spare time. It was a labor of love for Nancy and her family.
Nancy emotionally tells Dakota News Now she is really going to miss this hobby. This dream meant so much to her and her family.
“It is sad, it is sad because I will miss this store so much. It is a passion of mine, that is why we kept it open for so long. If it was up to my husband, we would have gotten out three years into it.”

Nancy and her husband were looking forward to spending more time with family and pursuing other hobbies.
“Being able to go fishing once in a while, go out of town for vacation, be with family more.... These are all things people take for granted and we now get to do them. So many people do have to work two jobs to survive in this world. We are just grateful that we get to slow down now, and not work all the time.”
