One of the deals we make with Mother Nature by living in Sioux Falls is that we'll endure the cold and the snow of a northern plains winter, and in exchange, we get mild summer.

We don't suffer as much from summer humidity as our southern neighbours in Nebraska. Sure, the corn sweat can make us plenty sticky come August. But, spend a July day in Omaha and you will recognize how not-gross we have it here.

How Often Sioux Falls Reaches 100 Degrees—And When

When it comes to summer temperatures, our good fortune continues. Our summers can get plenty hot. High temperatures get into the 90s often. Usually, we get there between June and the end of August. But we rarely get into the triple digits around here.

In fact, according to our friends at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls (NWS), our city has reached 100 degrees 231 times since 1893. "This event occurred in 64 of 132 years, slightly less than one half (48.5%) of the years on record" (1893-Present), the NWS says.

Sioux Falls hits 100 degrees most often in July, with 137 triple-digit days over the last 132 years. August then June come next. We've even gotten up there a few times in May and August.

1936 also claims Sioux Falls' longest hot streak when the city cooked for nine days in a row of 100, July 9 through July 17, 1936.

The 1930s were the hottest decade overall. From 1930-1939, Sioux Falls had 58 100-degree days. The first decade of the 21 century (2000-2009) was the coolest with just three.

So far in the 2020's we have gotten to 100 degrees eight times as of mid-June, 2025.
