Another South Dakota fall is coming. Mother Nature will get to show off with bright leaves, crisp air, and just enough chill to make you question whether you should wear shorts or a parka. Preparing for it isn’t rocket science, but it does require a little strategy.

5 Ways to Survive (and Actually Enjoy) Fall in South Dakota

1. Master the Art of Layering
Hoodie in the morning, T-shirt by noon, parka by 5 p.m. South Dakota fall weather is basically four seasons in one day. Layers aren’t fashion... they’re survival.

2. Fuel Up on Fall Flavors
Pumpkin spice is everywhere, but don’t forget the real MVPs: hot apple cider, caramel corn, and that one candle that makes your whole house smell like a bakery.

3. Rake… and Reward Yourself
Sure, raking leaves is a chore, but it doubles as free cardio. When you’re done, jump in the pile like you’re 8 years old again. (Bonus points if you don’t find your car keys in there later.)

4. Tune Up the House
Check your furnace now, before you’re crying into a space heater in November. Swap your paper-thin summer blanket for a comforter thick enough to qualify as camping gear.

5. Do the Classic Fall Stuff
Heartland Country Corn maze? Check. Pumpkin patch? Obviously. Long walk through Falls Park? Absolutely. At least one selfie with a pile of leaves? Mandatory.

Fall in South Dakota doesn’t last long, basically until the first surprise blizzard crashes the party, so grab your flannel and soak it up while you can!
