Here’s a tail, or should I say a tale, of true heroism coming out of Marietta, Minnesota, a town located about 2 hours north of Sioux Falls, involving a foster dog with the instincts of Lassie, the strength of Houdini, and the timing of a Hollywood action star.

Late last week, in the early morning hours of Friday, September 12, a woman, her young son, and several other beloved pets were saved from a deadly house fire, thanks to the quick thinking and escape artistry of their foster dog, Meesha.

According to Dakota News Now, the incident occurred while everyone inside the home was fast asleep, everyone except Meesha, who ended up being on high alert!

Now, Meesha wasn’t just hanging out on the couch like your average canine house guest. No, he was locked in what’s affectionately known as the “Alcatraz kennel.” It's nicknamed that due to its near-impossibility for dogs to escape from.

How he pulled off this escape act remains a mystery. I'm thinking it was a Jedi mind trick. Regardless, once he busted free, he sprinted to his foster mom’s room and launched himself onto the bed like a four-legged alarm clock.

He woke his human up just in time, giving the woman a chance to scoop up her sleeping son and round up several other pets in the house.

Thankfully, almost everyone made it out safely, but a couple of cats remain unaccounted for. The home, however, was not so lucky; it was completely destroyed, leaving nothing but the concrete slab behind.

Here’s where the story gets even more heart-tugging: ironically, the woman rescued by Meesha is actually the cofounder of Mission Pawsible, a nonprofit that provides foster care for pets belonging to people going through things like, wait for it, house fires, domestic violence, and homelessness.

Yes, this woman has made it her life’s mission to help others through exactly these kinds of tragedies… and now finds herself needing that same support.

The family is currently staying in a hotel, thanks to insurance, and friends from the Marietta community have launched a GoFundMe page to help them get back on their feet. If you want to donate, you can do so here.

As for Meesha? If I were the woman, that dog wouldn’t be going anywhere. Foster no more, he's earned lifetime residency, full pantry privileges, a barrel of milk bones, and maybe even his own sleeper sofa.

She should also consider giving him a new name. Something like, “Meesha the Mighty?” Or simply: “Lifesaver!”
