In case you haven't noticed, the Sioux Empire is at war right now with the dreaded mosquito!

This summer has to be one of the worst in recent memory for those little bloodsuckers. They are horrible this year given all the precipitation the Sioux Falls area has received so far this summer.

I made the mistake of attempting to play golf on Sunday morning. Bad idea! First, my golf game sucks, and second, every mosquito in a 5-mile area decided to suck on me.

I don't know about you, but I am a mosquito magnet!

About 3 minutes into my game, I looked like a Schell no-pest strip that had been sitting in a musty garage all summer. I was covered in mosquitoes, and what soon will become itchy, red, welts.

You can't step outside for five minutes this summer without becoming a buffet line for these little blood-sucking bastards!

After I finished playing golf, I decided to go buzzing around town looking for a variety of mosquito repellants.

Everyone else had the same idea because I found nothing but empty store shelves where once could be found cans of mosquito repellants and bug sprays.

An article from CNN in 2023 said that mosquitoes are responsible for killing more people than any other animal, thanks to the fact that they spread diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and West Nile virus. Three things you definitely don't want or need in your life!

Not to mention they are just one gigantic nuisance!!

What's weird is all the different reactions people seem to get to mosquito bites. One person can emerge from the outdoors relatively unscathed with just a few minor bites, while others are left itching and scratching quarter-size, red, itchy welts, for seemingly days afterward.

The CNN article talks about how some people just taste better to the mosquito population than others. Mosquitoes respond differently to the array of chemicals making up each individual’s body odor bouquet, therefore making them more appetizing than others. I must taste like a piece of chocolate cake, with sprinkles, and a scoop of ice cream because Skeeters absolutely love me!

What steps can a person take to ditch the itch?

Experts say you should cover up your skin as much as possible. Then apply EPA-registered insect repellants, that contain ingredients like Deet to all exposed skin.

It's also a good idea to steer clear of areas with standing water whenever possible. They are mosquito havens.

The CDC has put together some tips to help avoid getting bitten by these little bloodsuckers. Check those out here.

A surprising town was named the worst place to live in all of South Dakota and the reason behind it is a bit unexpected.

Money Inc. made a list of the 20 worst cities and towns to live in all of South Dakota and no part of the state is left unmarked.

The list focused on a number of key factors, including crime rate, unemployment, low wages, and school funding.

So which city is the "worst" in South Dakota, according to the article? Read on:

Seven Mind-Blowing Wonders' of South Dakota

I think most of us have at least heard of the "Seven Wonders of the Modern World." We might not be able to rattle them off as easily as McDonald's value menu items, but chances are you've heard of at least some of them, right?

There's the Great Wall of ChinaChichén Itzá, a Mayan City on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The ancient city of Petra, in Jordan. Machu Picchu in Peru. Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro. The Colosseum in Rome, and finally, the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

Every state in the nation is known for having a series of natural wonders and signature landmarks. So, I thought I would come up with my own list of the "Seven Wonders of South Dakota."

The following is what I consider to be the signature landmarks, monuments, and natural wonders that are synonymous with the great state of South Dakota. I tried to give both sides of the state a little love while comprising this list.

You might have a few additions...

Let's get started. The Seven Wonders of South Dakota:
