The Surprising Perks Of Living In South Dakota
Sometimes, when it's a cold, gray day and the wind is whipping up snow, or the wind chill is hovering around 20 below, some of us wonder what it is that keeps us living in South Dakota.
Then I look around and remember. I love living in Sioux Falls and calling this beautiful state my home. It's not a feeling that is singular either. Pigeon 605 is reporting that South Dakota is experiencing more people moving into our state than moving out of it.

The study was done by the U-Haul company and showed South Dakota with a "50.9 percent positive in-migration score," bringing our state to 18th in terms of states with more people moving in than out.
There are several reasons why our state continues to attract new residents. One of the biggest reasons is money. South Dakota has no state income tax, which helps people keep more of what they earn. The cost of living is also lower than in many other states. This makes the state appealing to families, retirees, and people who work from home.
Job opportunities are another major draw. South Dakota has steady employment in areas like healthcare, education, manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. Cities like Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Brookings have growing job markets and continue to bring in new workers. Our cities also offer good schools, healthcare, and shopping while still feeling less crowded than larger metro areas.
Many people also move to South Dakota for a better quality of life. Residents often enjoy a slower pace, lower crime rates, and strong community connections. Neighbors tend to know each other, and many towns offer a safe, family-friendly environment.

Outdoor recreation obviously plays a role, too. Our state’s open spaces, parks, lakes, and trails attract people who enjoy fishing, hiking, and spending time outside. The Black Hills, in particular, are a popular destination.
While some rural areas still lose population, South Dakota’s larger cities continue to grow. For many people, the mix of affordability, job opportunities, and quality of life makes South Dakota a place worth calling home.
