If you like to frequent the public recreation trail system throughout Sioux Falls, be prepared to encounter some temporary closures in a few areas starting this week.

Dakota News Now reports that the city plans to apply a seal coating to specific trail sections over the next several weeks. The entire project will affect about six miles of recreation trails in and around the city.

According to Dakota News Now, the project kicks off on Thursday, (June 20) with a four-mile stretch of trail between Beadle Park on 11th Street to Tuthill Park on Cliff Avenue. That section will be closed for roughly 10 days.

Then beginning on Monday, (July 1) crews will turn their attention to a two-and-a-half mile section of trail from Sherman Park on 12th Street to 41st Street. That will be closed for a brief period.

The average closure time on most of the recreation trails is expected to last anywhere from four to eight hours while Park and Recreation Crews are busy applying the sealant.

Bikers, hikers, joggers, and walkers will be happy to hear that crews will not be working weekends, so the majority of the trail system will be open for public use.

There is a total of 36 miles of recreation trails that surround the city of Sioux Falls.

The trail system is open year-round, daily from 5 AM - 10 PM,  except for Falls Park and the Downtown River Greenway, which closes at midnight.
