Senator John Thune Becomes Senate Majority Leader
Twenty years after Murdo native John Thune won the senate seat formerly occupied by Senator Tom Daschle, Dakota News Now is reporting that he has become the Senate majority leader by secret ballot.
Thune most recently has served in the role of Republican whip behind Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Sources indicate the voting came down to Thune and Senator John Cornyn of Texas, with Thune winning the secret ballot 29 to 24.
Senator Thune received endorsements from Senator Mike Rounds and Senator Kevin Kramer from North Dakota, among others. Rounds praised Thune's work ethic and political know-how.
Thune lobbied for the position by raising millions for Republican candidates through the election cycle and finding success in the process.
