You may not know what a 'digital nomad' is, but the more than 18 million workers in the U.S. who identify as such understand who they are - and apparently they really like Sioux Falls.

Those workers, who emerged from the 2008 financial crash and later the COVID-19 lockdowns, sparked a remote work revolution, helping to normalize and mainstream remote work through initiatives such as co-working spaces and flexible work hours.

According to MBO Partners, 11% of U.S. workers now identify as digital nomads — a 147% increase since 2019. With that in mind, StorageCafe began tracking where digital nomads find the perfect mix of flexibility, affordability, and convenience.

To identify the most well-rounded cities for remote workers, they created a Live-Work-Play Index that considers:

  • Lifestyle
  • Digital readiness and work infrastructure
  • Safety and health
  • Affordability

They then ranked 169 major U.S. cities based on these indicators to see how well they cater to digital nomads. The result? Sioux Falls is the second most affordable place for digital nomads to call home.

South Dakota's largest city has average monthly costs of $2,362, which is the second lowest behind Springfield, Missouri.

Sioux Falls also landed in the Top Five in

  • Transportation: $332 per month (3rd)
  • One-bedroom Rent: $942 per month (3rd)
  • Groceries: $633 per month (4th)
  • Utilities: $328 per month (4th)
