Potentially faulty seatbelts are being blamed for a massive vehicle recall across the United States.

USA Today is reporting that Honda is recalling nearly 500,000 vehicles because the driver and front passenger seatbelts may not latch correctly.

According to Honda:

'The seat belt buckle channel for the driver and front passenger seat belts were manufactured out of specification, causing interference between the buckle channel and the release button. The buckle channel surface coating may deteriorate over time, and the release button may shrink against the channel at low temperatures, increasing friction.'

A total of 448,613 vehicles in the United States are covered by the recall, including:

  • 2017-2020 Honda CR-V
  • 2018-2019 Honda Accord
  • 2018-2019 Honda Accord Hybrid
  • 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey
  • 2019 Honda Insight

Another Honda-manufactured vehicle, the Acura RDX, is part of the recall for all 2019-2020 models.

Between March 2019 and January 2023, Honda has received 301 warranty claims over the issue. To date, no injuries or deaths have been reported.

Honda anticipates contacting impacted owners by mail on April 17 with information on getting a free seatbelt buckle assembly replacement.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has more information on the recall.
