After dealing with a significant amount of snow each of the past two weekends, South Dakota is about to deal with a major cold snap this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Polar Vortex is bearing down on the region with large areas of frigid Arctic air.

The latest NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook calls for snow in the area on Thursday and Friday, with accumulations of up to three inches in Sioux Falls.

Things change drastically on Friday as the temperature steadily drops throughout the day to seven degrees by 5:00 PM. Overnight lows will hover around zero.

Saturday, dangerously cold wind chills move into Sioux Falls, from -10 to -20 degrees, with a projected daytime high temperature of four degrees. There is also the possibility of another two inches of snow.

Sunday's wind chills will be even more brutal, forecasted to be -15 to -30.

There is some relief in sight, though, with highs next Tuesday (12/16) and Wednesday (12/17) expected to be in the mid-30s.
