SEC Cracks Down on Feigning Injuries
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — As the beginning of the 2025-2026 college football season draws near, the SEC is cracking down on players and teams faking injuries.
In a release, the league office states, "To combat the practice of feigning injuries, the rules committee passed a rule that if a player presents as injured after the ball is spotted by officials, that team will be charged a Team Timeout or a delay penalty if all timeouts have been used. That player must remain out of the game for at least one down, even if that team is granted a team timeout, and may not return to the game until receiving approval of professional medical personnel designated by their institution."
The practice has been heavily scrutinized by college football fans nationwide, especially in the SEC, where many programs are among the biggest perpetrators of faking injuries in college football.
Calls for implementing this rule have been growing immensely; however, drawing the line between a real and fake injury has been tricky.
Feigning injuries disrupts the flow of the game and can unfairly gift a team extra time to set up for the next play or stop momentum.
Now, the SEC has taken the first steps towards putting an end to the practice
