Move over Jordan Spieth, there's a new rising young star on the PGA Tour and his name is Justin Thomas.

The 23-year old Kentucky native held off Spieth and the hottest player in the game these days, Hideki Matsuyama, to notch his second win of the 2016-17 season, a three-shot victory at the SBS Tournament of Champions, in Maui.

In this edition of 'Off The Tee' I talk with Joel Harrington from 4 Deep Golf blog about Thomas' strong start to the season, plus:

  • Matsuyama's red hot run continues. He now has four wins and two second place finishes (both to Thomas) in his last six events.
  • Spieth had a wild week, with some bad holes early in the round,. before a big Sunday surge.
  • The PGA Tour and LPGA Tour are talking about turning the SBS Tournament into a joint event in the future.
  • Jim Furyk looks likely to be the next US Ryder Cup Captain for the 2018 event in Paris.
  • The Web.com tour had a wild first round (crazy high winds, horrible scores) in the Bahamas for the Great Exuma Classic.
  • Rory McIlroy has shed additional light on why he missed the 2016 Olympic golf competition in Rio. McIlroy says he 'resents' needing the Olympics to grow the game and was conflicted politically about participating.

Here's my conversation with Joel:
