Thousands gathered on the campus of Northern State University on Saturday for a memorial service to honor longtime college basketball coach Don Meyer, whose friends said his legacy of compassion for others would surpass even his accomplishments on the court.

Former Northern State head coach Don Meyer was a coach, mentor, husband (to his wife, Carmen), and friend.

Don Meyer, one of the winningest coaches in college basketball who came back from a near-fatal car accident and liver cancer before closing out his career, died Sunday in Aberdeen. He was 69.

The former Northern State Coach was diagnosed with cancer in 2008.
