Race favorite American Pharoah ran through a driving rain to win the 140th Preakness Stakes on a muddy track at Pimlico Race Course near Baltimore on Saturday.
There were three major sporting events this past weekend: the NFL draft, the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight and the Kentucky Derby. Only the NFL draft mattered.
After nearly 4,350 winners, more than 1,000 falls, 20 straight jockey titles, countless broken bones, Tony McCoy will end his record-shattering career Saturday.
Right from the start, a horse trained by one not so over-the-hill Hall of Famer and ridden by another took control of the Preakness. The result: a huge upset and the end of any hopes for a Triple Crown attempt at the Belmont Stakes.
Orb is ready. The Kentucky Derby winner put in his final workout before the Preakness, breezing four furlongs in 47.18 seconds, galloping out five furlongs in 59.54 and delighting trainer Shug McGaughey.
Now that Shug McGaughey has won the Kentucky Derby, it's time for the 62-year-old trainer to go after another race missing from his Hall of Fame resume.
He may never run for the Kentucky Derby roses, but Illinois race horse Magna Fortuna and his owners are celebrating a victory none-the-less - his survival.
