As time rolls on, basketball changes. The positions, the players that fill those positions and what's expected of those players all change. But a successful basketball team's need for a true point guard hasn't changed, and don't expect it to change any time soon.

Louis Peterson, a 6-foot senior guard from O'Gorman High School, is a true point guard and this week's Athlete of the Week.

The definition of a true point guard differs slightly from coach to coach, but it's safe to say Peterson meets the requirements.

"He's a very unselfish player, he's pretty 'headsy' and he knows his main job is to get the offense going," said O'Gorman varsity coach Derek Robey. "His main job is to be the coach on the floor and get the ball where it needs to go."

Peterson does plenty of that on the court, but he's also proven he can step up in crucial situations.

"He's hit a lot of big buckets for us in a sense of getting us over the top, whether it's the momentum or a game-winning look," Robey said.

That game-winning look came in this year's season-opener for O'Gorman on Dec. 13 at Brandon Valley High School. Peterson hit a short runner in the waning moments to give O'Gorman the season-opening 62-61 victory.

Peterson spent much of his life around sports, especially baseball and basketball. He developed that skill set teams value in a starting point guard from all the practice and time he spent on the court with his friends and older brother.

Peterson never struggled to find motivation to stay on the court and play high school varsity basketball.

"Honestly, I've pushed myself a lot in practicing and lifting," Peterson said. "Being on a team that's very talented, I've always wanted to stay with that talent and be with my teammates. I don't want to fall off."

This being Peterson's final season at O'Gorman, he's pushing for the chance to head out as a champion.

"Competing for a state title is our end goal for this basketball season," Peterson said.

Of course, you can't discount the goals Peterson already achieved this season, like "winning the city" with victories over Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Christian.

Peterson is keeping his options open for when his time at O'Gorman comes to a close. He hopes to study optometry in college and hasn't ruled out playing basketball. But before those decisions are finalized, he has a basketball and spring baseball season to enjoy.

Congratulations to Louis Peterson, this week's Athlete of the Week.
