
South Dakota Hospitals Shine With Top National Ratings
In South Dakota, we are fortunate to have access to top-notch healthcare at a level typically reserved for larger places.
Now there's a new list out that shows which facilities in the Mount Rushmore State are among the best in the nation.
Making the List
Forbes has published its first-ever list of the Top Hospitals in America. Beginning with approximately 5,400 general acute care hospitals, they ranked hospitals in four key areas, using data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services:
- Patient Outcomes
- Hospital Best Practices
- Value
- Patient Experience
Once the numbers were examined, 253 hospitals nationwide received an overall rating of five stars, and 509 hospitals received an overall rating of four stars. Five of those are South Dakota facilities:

South Dakota Five-Star Hospitals
- Brookings Hospital - Brookings
- Prairie Lakes Hospital - Watertown
- Sanford Medical Center - Aberdeen
South Dakota Four-Star Hospitals
- Avera St. Luke's Hospital - Aberdeen
- Monument Health Hospital - Rapid City
And while neither Avera nor Sanford's main Sioux Falls hospitals earned a four or five-star rating, six of their facilities in Nebraska, North Dakota, and Minnesota did:
