Kirby Smart Shares Early Thoughts on Ty Simpson
Alabama and Georgia both get a bye week heading into the monumental matchup between the two teams on September 27, giving us two weeks to sit in anticipation of what could be the biggest game on both teams' schedules.

The discourse has already started, with early betting lines opening with the Bulldogs as a four-point favorite over the Crimson Tide. If the Tide closes as an underdog, it would mark the fifth-straight game Alabama has been an underdog against Georgia. Alabama is 4-1 in those matchups, with the lone loss coming in the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship in Indianapolis.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is already watching film of Alabama to prepare his team for a rematch of last year's second-half thriller in Tuscaloosa, where Alabama escaped with a 41-34 victory after big plays from true freshmen Ryan Williams and Zabien Brown in the final three minutes of the game.
Smart was asked his thoughts on Alabama's new starting quarterback, Ty Simpson, during Wednesday's SEC Coaches Call.
"From what I've seen, he's extremely accurate and he's extremely accurate," Smart said during the coaches' call. "And those are two things I already knew, turning the tape on."
Ty Simpson has turned in two strong performances over the last two weeks, completing 17-17 passes for 226 yards and four total touchdowns against ULM, and completing 24-29 passes for 382 yards and four passing touchdowns against Wisconsin. He's completing 71.9% of his passes so far this season, third among SEC starters this season.
Within the SEC, Ty Simpson is fifth in passing yards (862) and tied for second in touchdowns (nine) through three games this season. He's also first in quarterback rating (186.6) and has yet to turn the ball over for the Crimson Tide. He is one of three starting quarterbacks in the SEC yet to throw an interception this season (Gunner Stockton, Jackson Arnold).
Simpson will face his biggest challenge yet as a starter when Alabama travels to Georgia to take on the Bulldogs on September 27.
