Employees Say More Layoffs Are Happening At John Deere In Iowa and Illinois

Unfortunately, this is not a new thing to workers in Iowa or Illinois.  More layoffs are coming to John Deere.

While the company hasn't confirmed, employees are saying they were alerted to the job cuts on Wednesday, October 16.

John Deere Production and Profits

It was just a few years ago the company announced record profits.  Both 2021 and 2022 were record years.  Since then, things have changed.

Company earnings are still in the billions, they aren't what they used to be.  CEO of John Deere John C. May said in a statement, "We are proactively managing our production and inventory levels to adapt to demand changes and position the business for the future."

May, whose total compensation in 2023 was $26.72 million, continued by saying "Despite market conditions, we are committed to our strategy and are actively investing in and deploying innovative technologies, products, and solutions to ensure our customers' success."

How Many Jobs Has John Deere Cut Recently?

There has not been a mass layoff of thousands of people at once.  But it's been death by all the small cuts.

As of August 1, 2024, more than 2700 people were laid off from John Deere in Iowa and Illinois.  The Quad City Times did the research going back to October of 2023 to figure out how many, and from where all the layoffs are coming.

More Layoffs Expected At John Deere

According to employees who told KWQC, about 200 people will be losing jobs at Harvester Works in East Moline and 80 in Davenport.

Employees were being told on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, this story is still developing and nobody knows the full amount of cuts during this round.  And nobody knows when the cuts will happen again.  But the pattern of John Deere laying off people makes most in the Quad Cities believe that more will be on the way at some point.
