A Mudbugs Journey: Kason Muscutt’s Next Big Challenge In Michigan
It catches people a little off guard when they learn that Shreveport, Louisiana has a popular ice hockey team. But the Shreveport Mudbugs have been a big part of the Shreveport and Bossier City community for over two decades.
The team has gone through a few different incarnations and affiliations, but have always been extremely popular with fans around the area.
Who Are The Shreveport Mudbugs?
The latest version of the Mudbugs sees them as a member of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), which is a Junior League. That means the league is home to players who find themselves between high school, college, and professional hockey.
There's a long list of NAHL players that have transitioned to major college hockey, and even the NHL, from their NAHL teams. Now its time to add another name to that list, and its not just a former Shreveport Mudbug, but a former Shreveport resident...
This Shreveport Mudbug Is A Michigan Man
Kason Muscutt, a name that rings bells for most hockey fans in the Ark-La-Tex, is officially heading to play for the University of Michigan.
He isn’t just any local kid...he’s the son of Shreveport Mudbugs legend and General Manager Scott Muscutt. Kason grew up right here in the Shreveport area, watching his dad build a legacy before carving out his own path wearing the teal and purple. It’s the kind of hometown hero story we love to see...one of our own going from local ice at George's Pond inside historic Hirsh Coliseum, to the Big Ten stage.
From Sioux City To The Big House
Before making the jump to college hockey’s elite, Kason had to prove himself in the USHL...the top junior league in the country. He spent time grinding with the Sioux City Musketeers, showing the same grit and determination we saw when he played here at home. That experience in Sioux City was crucial, sharpening his skills against some of the best young talent in the world before taking this next step.
Now he joins the roster at Michigan, and folks, this isn’t just any college program. The Wolverines are an absolute factory for NHL talent...a place where future pros are made. Kason is walking into a locker room that has some of the top young talent in the country, and the people around Kason have been saying that this is the type of environment he was conditioned for.
Kason grew up around professional Mudbugs players. Being in the locker room around guys that have been up and down the roads making a living on the ice. Then he got a chance to take the ice with a franchise that has his own dad as the watchful eye over the team's success. If you were going to make a hockey player in a factory, it would have something like Kason Muscutt's story.
Joining An NHL Factory
When we talk about Michigan hockey, we are talking about serious pedigree. In just the last five years alone, the Wolverines have produced over a dozen NHL Draft picks, including a staggering number of first-round selections. Like number 1 overall pick Owen Power, and 2nd overall pick Matty Beniers.
It is a program that reloads rather than rebuilds, constantly funneling players directly to the professional ranks.
Not only that, but college hockey isn't like other college sports. Kason just signed with Michigan, a team already 20 games into their season, and will be joining them on the ice this month.
For a kid from Shreveport to land in a program with that kind of firepower is huge. It puts our local hockey scene on the map in a major way. We will be watching closely as Kason puts on the Maize and Blue, knowing he started his journey right here in Shreveport.
