It has taken over half a decade to get done, but it appears a new multi-use trail system is coming to the Iowa City area, within walking distance to Kinnick Stadium.

Original Idea for the Trail is 7 Years Old

More than half a decade after the idea was first pitched, CBS2 reports that the State Board of Regents approved the land easement for a new trail system within University Heights. Developers say the trail will be for multiple uses and will open up the area around Kinnick Stadium to more visitors.

How Much Land will the Trail System Cover?

CBS2 reports that the project will cover 36 acres of land and be just a few blocks away from Kinnick Stadium. 12 acres of land for the project were acquired from a family in 2018, while the rest used to be part of property owned by the State Board of Regents. Officials say the trails will help tie the community together.

What is the Cost of the Project?

CBS2 reports that the project is expected to cost around $850,000. That will pay for a paved, handicap accessible trail that goes to an overlook, plus three other trails that will vary in difficulty. According to CBS2, University Heights will cover some of the cost, with the rest covered by grants.

No timeline has been revealed for the project.
