As we head into the holiday shopping season, keeping tabs on our personal information is more important than ever.

That's especially true now after details of a possible massive local data breach are coming to light.

Dakota News Now is reporting that Sioux Falls-based AAA Collections has reached out to its clients in a letter informing them that their name and Social Security numbers could be compromised.

The data breach dates back to a three-day period in early September when the company’s computer system was compromised and during that time names and Social Security Numbers were copied.

According to a AAA Collections filing with the Montana Attorney General's office, the company detected a 'security incident' with its computer system September 7. An internal investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party gained access to the company’s computer system on September 5 and continued to have access until September 7.

It took AAA until October 24 to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted.

The exact number of compromised hasn't been released, but South Dakota law requires any breach involving at least 250 people be reported to the Attorney General’s office.

Experian recommends doing any or all of the following to protect yourself in a data breach:

  • Secure Your Accounts
  • Initiate a Fraud Alert
  • Monitor Your Financial Accounts and Credit Reports
  • Freeze or Lock Your Credit File
