Justin Morneau came up short in fan voting for the final spots in the All-Star Game, but the former Minnesota Twins and current Colorado Rockies first baseman has been added to the National League team for Monday's Home Run Derby at Target Field.

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and White Sox pitcher Chris Sale were voted into the All-Star Game by a fan vote announced on Thursday.

Colorado teammate NL captain Troy Tulowitzki then added Morneau to the Home Run Derby roster.

In a statement on the Rockies website, Morneau said:

"I just want to say thank you to all of the Rockies, Twins and Morneau fans who spent so much time voting. It was a very humbling experience.

"See you at the derby."

Morneau's manager for the Twins, Ron Gardenhire, told twinsbaseball.com:

"I know it means a lot to him. I know he talked about tipping his hat to the fans. Now he has a chance to play in front of the fans, so I'm happy for him. I wish he would've made the team. I thought that would've been cool to see him on that line. But coming back for the home run contest there will be a lot of people rooting for him, and we all know what he means to this organization."

Morneau played 11 seasons for for Minnesota, is a former American League MVP, a four-time All-Star and won the 2008 Home Run Derby at old Yankee Stadium.

In addition to Morneau, Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson was added to the American League team for the Home Run Derby.

The American League lineup includes Brian Dozier of the Twins, Baltimore's Adam Jones, defending Home Run Derby champion Yoenis Cespedes of Oakland and Toronto's Jose Bautista, the AL captain.

The National League team is made up of Morneau, Tulowitzki, Miami's Giancarlo Stanton, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Yasiel Puig and Cincinnati's Todd Frazier.
