What Did South Dakota Say to North Dakota? Mom Likes Me Best!
Don't be dissuaded by the locals. Our biased opinion does have merit, but both South Dakota and North Dakota have strong qualities and attractions.
One of the most notable and assuming is the wide-open spaces both states offer.
Even though it is the 19th largest state in the country, North Dakota is the third-least populous state. Again, wide open!
Being a native of South Dakota, I'm most familiar with its attractions and way of life.
We're at the crossroads of two major Interstate highway systems here in Sioux Falls. I-90 extends from Washington to Massachusetts. The commerce that passes through this part of the country is immense.
And when you travel the east-west I-90 it takes you to some of the shining features of South Dakota:
Black Hills
Two National Parks - Badlands National Park and Wind Cave National Park
Crazy Horse
Mount Rushmore
Wall Drug
Mitchell Corn Palace
Lake Oahe on the Missouri River
By comparison, South Dakota is slightly larger than North Dakota in population at about 895,000 people.
What do both states have that are similar? Both South Dakota and North Dakota have Badlands.
Remember your history? Seth Bullock became friends with Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War. It's Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota that covers more than 70,000 acres.
Bullock commemorated Roosevelt by naming Sheep Mountain just outside of Deadwood, SD as Mount Roosevelt. It's an easy hike and at the top, you can see five different states on a clear day.
Other top attractions in North Dakota include Lake Sakakawea. Anglers will make the comparison to South Dakota's Lake Oahe which is also part of the Missouri River.
If you do plan to travel to North Dakota keep this in mind: It is illegal to take a nap with your shoes on.
But then again, it's illegal to lie down and fall asleep in a cheese factory here in South Dakota.
