Former Hawkeye Tristan Wirfs Signs Historic New NFL Contract
A former Iowa Hawkeye football star is making NFL history, and breaking the bank in the process!
ESPN reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and former Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs have reached an agreement on a contract extension. The new deal is for five years and is worth over $140 million. A staggering $88 million is guaranteed. The deal makes Wirfs the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history!
Wirfs, already a three-time Pro Bowl selection, was in the final year of his rookie contract that paid him just over $18 million this season.
ESPN reports the new deal with keep him in Tampa Bay through 2029. His annual salary of $28.1 million breaks the record previously held by Detriot Lion OL Penei Sewell.
The native of Mt. Vernon, Iowa was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2020 and stepped in immediately to help protect Tom Brady. All the Buccaneers did during his rookie season was win the Super Bowl. ESPN reports that Wirfs had been kept out of team-padded practices during training camp while the deal was being finalized.
