Was Josh Allen Better Last Year For His MVP Season?
This year has once again been a trying year for Buffalo Bills fans. It's the first time in 5 years that it looks like a different team might win the AFC East. They've lost a couple of games, that many people think should have been easy wins. But we still have our MVP quarterback, Josh Allen. The question is, was he better last year, too?
Josh Allen was the MVP last year
At the end of the 2023 season, many people counted the Bills out after they cleaned house. They cut a bunch of veterans including Jordan Poyer, Tre'Davious White, Mitch Morse, and more. Then they traded away their #1 receiver Stefon Diggs. Gabe Davis went to Jacksonville in free agency.
The roster was stripped of just about every weapon that Josh Allen had become comfortable with. Then he went on to still have one of the most amazing seasons of his career. He was just one play away from taking them to the Super Bowl. It earned him an MVP honor for the first time from the league.
Was Josh Allen better last year than he is this year?
It makes you wonder how Josh Allen from last year compares to Josh Allen this year. The answer is, he's still pretty dang good. He's actually better.
Completion Percentage
During his MVP Season, Allen had a 63.6 passing completion percentage. This year, he's at 70. Certainly, that can change, but so far, he's trending better for completion percentage.
Passing Yards
Last year, Allen threw for a total of 3,731 yards (not including playoffs) in the 17 regular season games. He still has 3 games to go this year and he's only 455 yards short of that already at 3,276 yards. If he throws for around 150 yards per game, he can match that. Right now he's averaging around 234 per game. So he's pacing to throw around 4,000 yards this year.
Yards Per Pass Attempt
He's throwing further this year too. His Yards per pass attempt average was 7.7 last year. He's at 8.1 yards per pass this year. It's the longest YPP of his career. Again, this could go down over the next 3 weeks, but if we're comparing this year to last year, we can only look at what he's done so far.
Touchdowns
Last year, Allen accounted for 28 touchdowns. This year he's at 25 with 3 games to go. His best season so far was in 2020 when he had 37.
Interceptions
This is the one thing that he has been worse with this year. Allen has already thrown 10 interceptions. Last year, he was at 6.
He's also been under more pressure. He's already taken 33 sacks so far this year. Last year, he was pretty clean with only 14 sacks on the books.
As Long As The Bills Have Josh Allen, They Have A Chance
If we're comparing apples to apples, Allen's season this year looks better on paper than last year's MVP season. How many times have you heard that even though this roster might not be the best that Brandon Beane has put together during his tenure in Buffalo, as long as the Bills have Allen, they will always have a chance to win it?
That's a lot of pressure for one guy. It's not to say that the other guys on this roster aren't trying or aren't even contributing, it's just that Allen is an X-factor in the NFL. He can do just about everything you ask him to do. You need 15 yards to end a game, watch him run. You need a hail mary pass to connect 70 yards down the field, check out his arm.
He can do it all. Will he earn another MVP honor at the end of the year?
