Holy Buckets! Sioux Falls Woman Loses A Whopping $58K in New Scam

These darn scammers never rest. The Sioux Falls Police Department is currently investing in a sophisticated scam that highlights the lengths scammers will go to snatch money.

A 68-year-old Sioux Falls woman is the newest victim of scams going around the Sioux Falls area. This scam cost this woman $58,000.

Our friends at Dakota News Now are reporting this woman received a pop-up alert on her iPad claiming to be Apple Security. The alert gave the Sioux Falls woman a phone number to call to address problems she was having with her account. Worried about the safety of her personal information, the woman called the number and talked with multiple parties. Eventually, she spoke with a "federal agent" who accused her of money laundering. That's not even the craziest part of the story.

The scammer on the phone gave the Sioux Falls woman "instructions to withdraw money from her bank with the promise that the money would be secure and they would send her a check for that amount." Scammers even instructed her to tell her local bank teller she was using the money to buy a new car or furniture. Unfortunately, this Sioux Falls woman easily gave these awful scammers $58,000 after following instructions on withdrawing a large sum of money from her account.

The Sioux Falls woman did file a report on Friday, May 3rd. But the SFPD Public Information Officer Sam Clemens says it will be "a really steep hill to climb" to get this woman her money back.

Officer Clemens with the Sioux Falls Police Department wants to remind residents that scammers are difficult to track. They like to use fear and a sense of urgency to get what they want.
