Authorities Identify Sioux Falls Man in Fatal I-90 Crash
We now know the name of the Sioux Falls man who was killed driving the wrong way on Interstate 90 on July 22.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 31-year-old Samuel Vining was behind the wheel of a 2020 Hyundai Elantra traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-90, 18 miles west of Kadoka.
At about 9:39 PM, Vining's vehicle crashed head-on with a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country Van that was driving east in the eastbound lane of I-90 near mile marker 134.
The driver of the Chrysler Town and Country, Isaac Thompson, age 24, of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Philip Hospital.
A passenger in the van, Mahra Wick, age 22, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to a Rapid City hospital.
Both were wearing a seatbelt.
Vining, who was also wearing a seatbelt, sustained fatal injuries.
I-90 was closed at mile maker 131 and traffic was detoured for about two hours. The Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
