BLOOMINGTON, IL -- The Sioux Falls Stampede opened the 2014-15 season with an early goal from Troy Loggins, but came up on the wrong end of a 2-1 shootout against the Bloomington Thunder Saturday night at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The inaugural game for the Thunder featured a goaltending battled between the Stampede’s Art Brey who stopped 34 of 35 shots and former Stampede goaltender David Jacobson who turned aside 29 of 30 for the Thunder.

The Stampede earned a point with the shootout loss.

The Stampede showed a lot of energy in the first period and grabbed the first goal of the game just 5:18 in when Logan O’Connor sent a pass from the top of the left circle to in front of the net for Loggins who one-timed the pass through the pads of Jacobson for a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later the Herd found themselves on a 5-on-3 advantage for over a minute, but Jacobson was able to keep the Herd off the board, stopping 10 shots in the period. On the other end of the ice,

Brey was tested seven times and stopped all the shots he faced and the Herd took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

The second period started out well for the Stampede with back-to-back power play opportunities, but the Herd were unable to muster anything and the Thunder stole the momenteum. After several near misses and big saves from Brey, the Thunder finally broke through at 16:03 when Van Barr took a pass in the right circle and wristed a shot past the stick side of Brey to make it 1-1. That was the only goal of the period as the teams headed into the locker room tied 1-1 with Bloomington outshooting the Stampede 11-5.

Sioux Falls regained some momentum in third as both teams exchanged some good scoring chances and near goals, but Brey and Jacobson stood tall between the pipes and kept the game tied 1-1 forcing overtime.

After a scoreless overtime in which the Herd were outshot 7-1, the game went into a shootout where the Herd were outscored 2-1.

The Thunder outshot the Herd 36-30 on the night while going 0-for-3 on the power play. Sioux Falls finished the night 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

Sioux Falls returns to action next Friday when they travel to Kearney, NE to face the Tri-City Storm at 7:35 PM.
