Starbucks Quietly Closes Five Sioux Falls Locations Over Weekend
You might need to find a new spot for your daily Caramel Macchiato, or prepare to wait in an even longer line at the remaining stores, because several Starbucks locations around the Sioux Falls area just brewed their last cup.
Over the weekend, Starbucks quietly closed the doors on a handful of Sioux Empire locations as part of a nationwide restructuring effort.
Dakota News Now reports, the Seattle-based coffee giant didn’t share exactly how many locations were axed, but “several hundred” across the U.S. and Canada reportedly served their final Frappuccino. Can we get a moment of silence for the blender?

Locally, here’s who’s gone:
1403 North Marion Road (Marion & Career)
2230 South Marion Road (Marion & Lake Shore)
1501 West 41st Street (41st & Grange)
108 Venture Place in Tea
And the brand-spanking-new Starbucks in Harrisburg, which oddly enough never even opened. Built, but never barista’d.
The now-closed Sioux Falls locations weren’t exactly seasoned veterans either; most were only open for two to three years themselves.
Employees got the unfortunate news on Friday, September 26, and according to Dakota News Now, Starbucks will be offering severance packages or transfers where possible. So hopefully your favorite barista pops up again at a different location.
Why the sudden caffeine closure, you ask?
Starbucks says it’s less about losing the latte war and more about long-term financial viability. In other words, some stores just weren’t pulling their espresso shots when it came to profits or customer experience.
Let’s be honest, here in Sioux Falls, you can't walk down the block without tripping over a coffee shop. So, stiff competition might have played a role here.

That said, the company is planning to redesign many of the surviving stores over the next year to give them a warmer, more welcoming feel.
Even after this latest wave of closures, Starbucks is still brewing strong, with somewhere around 18,300 North American locations. For context, that’s down slightly from the 18,734 reported on June 29, 2025.
There's no need to panic, given it's pumpkin spice season again. Take comfort in knowing there are still plenty of Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes to be found in Sioux Falls and throughout the country.
