Class AA for volleyball and basketball is closer to a Sweet-16 postseason system.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association held their annual Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, April 18. Activities Directors from Class AA member schools were on hand for the vote, and all made their voices known on the issue of switching to the Sweet-16 system.

Those that were for the change of the playoff system referenced the unfairness of the district/region format, while the activities directors against the proposal referenced travel as the main issue.

After hearing the discussion of both sides, the SDHSAA Board of Directors approved the switch to a Sweet-16 on a 6-3 vote. The change would remove the double elimination district/region format.

Class AA will feature 18 teams this upcoming season. The bottom two teams would miss the postseason, while the other 16 will be placed in a traditional single elimination tournament bracket.

Class B also had the sweet-16 format approved by the SDHSAA Board of Directors. That motion was passed 8-1.

The proposal will now be sent to a June meeting in which the board will vote on the measure again. If it is approved in June, it will be implemented. The Sweet-16 format could start as early as 2017-2018.
