Sioux Falls Loses Coaching Legend

A Sioux Falls track and cross country legend passed away this week at the age of 88, an inspiration for thousands of athletes for 50 years.

Rich Greeno arrived at Lincoln High School in 1967 as the head coach of the Track and Field team. He became very well known for running and coaching alongside his athletes during their workouts.

In 1990, Greeno decided it was time to move on from Lincoln but wasn't ready to hang it up completely. A year later he began coaching at The University of Sioux Falls where he spent 14 years and assisted in four conference championships.

Then in 2004, Greeno returned to Lincoln but this time as a volunteer hurdle coach. After a multiple years of volunteering, deteriorated health prevented him from being more involved.

The city of Sioux Falls currently has a Rich Greeno track meet every spring and Lincoln head track coach Jim Jarovski is planning on honoring coach Greeno with warm up t-shirts for all the current track athletes.

Greeno was an absolute motivation for thousands of kids and I can honestly say that he's the best coach that I've ever had the pleasure to train with. His great motivation and love for coaching will be missed but never forgotten. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.
