Good news South Dakota pet owners, soon your dog and your cat might be able to join you for an overnight stay inside a cabin at a South Dakota State Park.

As a pet owner, I had no idea they weren't allowed in cabins and lodges inside state parks already. Good thing I didn't try to take my two hounds camping at Newton Hills, huh? It also shows you how often I go camping. I need to get a life and STAT!

According to PetFriendlyTravel.com, dogs and cats are allowed in South Dakota State Parks, however, they must be kept on a leash that is no longer than 10 feet at all times. If you are outside of your campground area, your pet must be under your immediate control and more than 200 feet away from other campers.

So basically, your pet just can't wander around a state park unattended, nor are they allowed on any designated swimming beaches, or inside any state park building, like cabins, lodges, and comfort stations.

That soon could change if the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission reverses its stance on the current pet laws for state parks.

According to Dakota News Now, it's under consideration. The GFP commission is meeting on (November 3 and 4) to discuss that very topic.

Should they choose to amend the rules, Fido and Felix might soon be greenlighted to join you inside a South Dakota State Park cabin or lodge. That news should get their tails wagging!

Dakota News Now is also reporting that Game Fish and Parks is considering a second proposal to create a dog or cat accommodation fee of $10 per reservation per facility.

Pet owners who love to camp in South Dakota State Parks should know more soon. Until then, tell your pets to keep their paws crossed for good luck!
