Indoor Football League Cancels Remaining 2020 Season

The Indoor Football League has announced that it will cancel the rest of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement posted on the IFL website, the IFL has decided to cancel the rest of the 2020 season due to the unknowns of the COVID-19 pandemic and a lack of knowing when large gatherings for sporting events could even take place.

"This is a decision we take very seriously, and it comes as a result of extended, thoughtful discussion among our Board of Directors," said IFL Commissioner Todd Tryon. "Because there are so many critical unknowns that are out of our control, we feel as a league we would be best serving the health and stability of the IFL community by taking a proactive approach and focusing our talents and our resources toward preparing for a breakout 2021 season. The health and safety of our players, coaches, staff, and fans is our top concern."

The release also says that the 2021 season will increase to a 16-game regular season, up from the current 14 games, as a way to add value for season ticket holders and sponsors.

Only two games were played prior to the league shutting down due to the virus. Quad City defeated Cedar Rapids on March 7, while San Diego beat Bismarck on March 8.

Locally, the Sioux Falls Storm never took the field this season. The Storm was originally scheduled to begin the season on March 15. They now join the Sioux Falls Stampede and Sioux Falls Skyforce in having the rest of their seasons canceled.

In a separate release, the Sioux Falls Storm has announced that season ticket holders can roll over their tickets to 2021 and if they elect to do so they will receive the extra home game at no extra charge. Along with that, season ticket holders will receive an invitation to a special event later this summer or fall and be entered into different offseason contests.
