BBB Alerts South Dakotans of Potential Smart TV Scam

Now we need to worry about falling victim to a scam while attempting to watch a favorite show on our smart TVs.

The Better Business Bureau is warning people to watch out for potential scam artists utilizing pop-up ads on smart TVs to relieve you of your money and gain access to your valuable information.

According to Dakota News Now, here's how it works, while attempting to open a familiar streaming service on your smart TV, you instead receive a pop-up telling you there’s a problem with your device or service. You are then prompted to call a number or visit a website to resolve the issue.

Upon doing so you are then routed to a phony customer service representative who asks you to pay an activation fee or asks for remote access to your smart TV to install malware or gain access to your sensitive information.

Either way, it has the potential to spell big trouble for those who fall susceptible to this new scam.

Dakota News Now reports that the BBB has already received numerous reports from people regarding this scam.

Should you encounter a pop-up ad like this, the BBB advises people to research fees they’re asked to pay, double-check with customer support, and never agree to let anyone have access to your device remotely.
