Pistons Take Two In The Draft; Does It Matter?

Another NBA Draft is now complete.  And the Detroit Pistons took a pair of notable players in Thursday night's draft.

With the fifth overall pick, Detroit took 6-7 shooting guard Ausar Thompson from Overtime Elite.  People say he's got tremendous upside, we'll see about that.

And then, the Pistons traded back into the first round, sending the first pick of the second round (31st overall) and a pair of future second-round picks to the Boston Celtics where they took University of Houston point guard Marcus Sasser.

We'll see how good these guys are in due time.  But right now, I say:  Big deal...

Unless Thompson and Sasser are really good defenders and can help the Pistons close games in the fourth quarter, these picks don't matter.

Ever since Tom Gores (pictured above right with team president Tory Weaver) took over ownership of this team, they haven't won a playoff series.  Hell, they haven't even won a playoff game under his leadership.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  The Pistons are the worst fourth quarter team I've ever seen in the NBA.  And their team and individual defense is, uhhhh, severely lacking, to put it mildly.

And until the team improves those two things, they will NOT be relevant in State of Michigan sports.  Because once again, unlike the Lions, Red Wings, and to a lesser extent the Tigers, the Pistons have to be really good for the general sports watching public in the state of Michigan to care about them.

I hope Thompson and Sasser can make a difference.  But until and if they do, I am skeptical.  Because after all...
