Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen has elected to void the remaining three years of his contract with the team.

ESPN's Courtney Cronin is reporting that Griffen has elected to void his remaining contract following a great season in 2019. Griffen needed a minimum of six sacks or to play 57% of snaps on defense last year to get the right to void the deal. He finished with eight sacks and 41 total tackles.

What does this mean for both sides? For Griffen, he becomes a free agent and he has the right to sign with any other team in the NFL. Minnesota also finds a win in the situation as the team has saved $13 million in salary-cap space.

Important to note, Griffen and the Vikings can also work to negotiate a new contract that still pays Griffen but helps the Vikings with the salary cap.

Griffen was drafted by Minnesota in the 4th round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He has spent his entire 10-year career with Minnesota. Griffen has 257 total tackles, and 74.5 sacks in his career.
