The Sioux Falls Sports Authority team continues to do an outstanding job each year organizing this event welcoming thousands of runners to the Sioux Empire. They plan everything to give runners a great experience in Sioux Falls. Except for the weather.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls is predicting hot temperatures for Sunday, August 25th to be in the 90s. There will be a little wind, but this heat will be too overpowering.
After speaking with experts, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority chose to keep runners safe during this heat wave by canceling the Sioux Falls Marathon.
Due to above-average expected high temperatures and humidity, and with direction from our trusted medical team, the 2024 Full Marathon (26.2 miles) has been cancelled. The Half Marathon (7 am) and Miracle 5K (10:15 am) will begin and proceed as scheduled.
Runners who signed up for the Marathon have the option to participate in the Miracle 5K or Half Marathon races.
As a runner myself, I know how frustrating it is to have your race canceled. I also know running in the heat is not always the best idea. You want to push yourself, but sometimes you have to listen to your body.
If you're still participating in the Miracle 5K or Half Marathon races, good luck and stay hydrated!
