As the Sioux Falls Skyforce season draws near, the man tasked with molding the on-court talent admits it’s never too early to start planning.

The cycle almost never stops as Coach Nevada Smith feels that when one season ends, thoughts of next season starts almost immediately even before the pieces are in place.

“You start itching when the buzzer sounds to end the (previous) season. It’s such a different league as far as who you’re going to have returning and what guys you’re going to coach. We still didn’t know who was coming back up into the Summer League. Once Summer League ends you get an idea of who you’re going to might have, who you want and you build a plan from there.”

Despite the widespread changes in the roster, Smith says one thing that hasn’t needed must adjusting is the coaching staff with both Anthony Carter and Kasib Powell back in the fold.

“It’s awesome. We got to know each other last year in the feeling out stage and their responsibilities are greater this year in the things they’re going to be asked to do from my perspective. They’re both great coaches. They know what they’re doing on both sides of the ball and tremendous development coaches.”

To indicate how rare it is to keep coaching staffs intact, it’s the first time in Smith’s four years of coaching in the G League that his top two assistant coaches both return for a second year.

The Skyforce season begins on Saturday night at the Memphis Hustle with the first home game on Monday against the Lakeland Magic.
